Learning to Sew

What does the word “sewing” make you think about? I used to think it was something for older people.  Now sewing is more interesting. I am learning how to sew doll clothes, thanks to this video series by Liberty Jane. A few days ago I finished my first doll dress, using a free pattern from Pixie Faire. Kanani is modeling it for you.

I got the cloth and ribbon from Hobby Lobby.

The top is bunched up, because it’s a drawstring dress. The way the dress poofs out made Kanani look fat, so I gave her a ribbon belt.

The skirt looks like it has pleats.

I’m really happy with the way the hem turned out. :) I am happy it is so straight.

So I am planning to sew more doll clothes in the future. Right now I am a beginner, but hope to move up to the intermediate category eventually.  You should check out some of Liberty Jane’s clothing sets. They make one of a kind sets and then sell them on Ebay for over $100! Once they sold a set with a doll, an outfit, a dress form and clothing trunk for $500.  I can’t imagine owning any of their clothes, but they have the patterns for the clothing sets so others can make them too.

  1. I love sewing things for my dolls! I usually just do something like cut up one of my old skirts and then sew it into a dress by hand, though (it doesn’t always turn out too well). Do you sew stuff by hand or use a sewing machine?

  2. Sewing for dolls is really fun! I do it a lot. You did a great job on that dress! Kanani looks very pretty in it. :)

  3. YAYAYAY!! Another sewing student! I have been sewing since I was a little girl and I think it is a skill that is invaluable. Great job, the dress turned out awesome.

  4. Wow, the dress is so cute! I love the fabric, and Kanani looks so good it. I sew too, and it’s really fun to be able to make so many different things. You did an awesome job! :)

  5. Great fabric, nice sewing work, and congratulations on your first sewn doll outfit. I learned to sew in 4-H as a girl with help from my mom and grandma. I had hoped to pass that skill on to my daughters but that’s a work in progress!

  6. I am also a beginner at sewing and would like to learn more and improve. Did you know that on Liberty Jane Clothing every Friday they have Freebie Friday and they give a free sewing pattern that usually isn’t free. They only give it for free that day. You should check it out. Every Friday I save the free patterns. I have many patterns and plan to improve sewing. :)

  7. I am a beginner at sewing. I would like to get good enough to sell doll clothes, accessories and girl sized bags. I saw this pattern and a few others that are free. I am planning on using them to help me improve. I also want to make a blanket/ comforter for each of my dolls beds with matching pillows.
