The Guiding Compass – Part 18.5

I’m not sure if this really counts as a part.. It has a lot of crucial info to the story but I unfortunately don’t have any pictures. Since we have already moved, and this part is set at our old house, it doesn’t quite work. :P I hope you enjoy this “part” anyway! :) And I have one coming soon (really soon). And it has pictures, I promise. :)

(As you read you can imagine the dolls in your head.) :)

Sarah sneezed. Dust flew up into the air as she opened another box. Boxes, boxes boxes.

Packing. Never had she known it to be such a tedious process. The dolls were moving. Not across the room, not across the hall, but to an entirely new house.

“Alright girls, pack everything! Your clothes, your books, everything. Let’s get to work!” Sarah said, giving everyone a pep talk before they started for the day.

The dolls who had been gather around scattered off into multiple place throughout the house. Isabelle stayed behind. “So this is what it’s like to move huh?” she asked.

“Yep,” Sarah said, then sighed. It had been a stressful few days for her, and moving was not helping. Last night they had had a long talk in the living room, complete with lots of silence, and a few tears. The police had still not found Lea, but at least Sarah knew Lea was capable of taking care of herself. It gave her some comfort.

Only a little.

In a daze, Sarah began to pack up the television set. She carefully set it inside it’s original box, in between the styrofoam cushions. The storage bins, DVDs, and DVD player also went into the box. Next, she packed the pillows from the living room.

Sarah snapped back to reality when she heard fighting going on in the other room. She went to the bedroom and found Kanani and Jamie quarrelling.

“What’s going on?” Sarah asked, determined to put the fight to an end.

Jamie frowned. “She thinks I need to pack all the clothes! I want to keep some out! I have to have some clothes!”

“She DOES need to pack all the clothes!” Kanani insisted, “You told us too!”

Sarah sighed. “You can keep some out to wear for the next few days, but pack all the rest.” She rubbed her forehead. She was getting a headache.

Jamie flashed a triumphant smile at Kanani, who glared back.

“I don’t need this today. None of us do.” Sarah pleaded, “Kanani, this isn’t like you. Please just pack, okay guys?”

“Okay,” Kanani and Jamie mumbled in unison, ashamed of their argument. They began handing Kaya clothes to fold and put in the boxes.

“Uh, Sarah?” Grace asked, peeking in through the doorway, “Should we pack up Lea’s room?”

Sarah stood, stunned. Of course they should pack it up. They were going to move in a few days. But to Sarah, packing up Lea’s room was like clearing away the memories, erasing the fact she was ever in their family. It was accepting the fact that she was gone. Forever.

“She’s not gone. She’s going to come back.” Sarah whispered to herself. She tried to fight back the tears that were welling up in her eyes, but one escaped, trickling down her cheek. Hopefully the other dolls hadn’t noticed.

Looking up, she said, “Sure Grace. You can pack Lea’s room.”

Sarah took a deep breath, then let it out. The stress was getting to her. Sarah just wanted to curl up into a ball and cry her heart out. But she had had enough crying. She need to be strong. If not for herself, for her sisters. They all looked up to her. So Sarah put on a brave face, and went back to the other room, feeling as if she was drowning.

In a sea of packing boxes

To be continued!

You all will like the next part.

  1. Thank you so much for this special little part! I kinda teared up when I started to read. I think it is OK that there weren’t any photos, I totally understand, it was actually a nice and a good different. You are a very good writer and I think that your photos enhance your stories in a way, but I totally understand that you were moving and had school. I just started myself, (but that’s because I am homeschooled and bored with my summer.) Thanks and good job!
